No pain is associated with retinal detachment, so sometimes people don’t realize what is happening. Up to 50% of people who experience a retinal tear will have a retinal detachment. These signs can occur gradually as the retina pulls away from the supportive tissue, or they may occur suddenly if the retina detaches all at once. Another sign is seeing a shadow or a curtain descending from the top of the eye or across your field of vision from the side. Your vision might become blurry, or you might have poor vision. I tell all of my patients that if they experience any of the symptoms of a detached retina, they should not wait but come see me, or another eye doctor, immediately. If the retina gets torn, the fluid inside the eye can leak underneath and separate the retina from its underlying tissue. A detached retina is a serious condition that could possibly cause vision loss in that eye, and occurs when the retina becomes separated from its underlying supportive tissue.
